The 7th Ethio-Turkey Business and Investment Forum held in Addis

The 7th Ethio-Turkey Investment and Business Forum held at Sheraton Addis on Wednesday (December 27, 2016). Organized by Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Turkey-Ethiopia Business Council in partnership with the Embassy of Turkey in Addis Ababa and Business Diplomacy Directorate General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, the forum kicked offin the presence of distinguished guests from both countries including Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. WorknehGebeyehu and Economy Minister of Turkey, Mr. NihatZeybekci.

In his opening speech, Dr. Workneh said, "Ethiopia and Turkey have enjoyed a long-standing and historic relation". He added, "We are very much delighted and encouraged by the dynamic relation we have." Dr. Workneh commendedTurkey for its financial and technical assistance and asked for more investment in the country's priority areas, including agro-processing.

Minister of Economy of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. NihatZeybekcinoted, "This forum laid a new milestone for the two countries". He added, the bilateral business council would make sector matching for an enhanced business tie. The Minister said, "In the coming decades Africa is going to be the new engine of development and, Ethiopia,one of the rising stars, will be a land of opportunities."

Industry Minister Ahmed Abtew on his part said, "Ethiopia has already dedicated a desk for Turkey in the Ministry of Trade and Investment Commission to help both countries enhance information exchange and deliver better service for Turkish Investors". He Commended Turkish investors for the great role they played in increasing the export of the country and flow of FDI during GTP - I and called for a more robust role in GTP – II.  He added, "We have to embark on a high-quality investment for high value added production."

During the occasion the Chairman of Ethio-Turkey business Council (DEIK), Mr. EmreAykar said, "Ethiopia is one of our most important business partners in Africa". He praised the necessary jobs done by the government of Ethiopia like the preparation of necessary legal arrangement in Banks to ease transactions, ease in visa and immigration procedures for business people, incentives for Turkish investors in tax exemption, etc.

Mr. Solomon Afework, president of Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association said, "This forum is a way to further deepen the bilateral trade relation between the two countries". Noting the important role played by the mutual investment protection agreement in increasing Turkish investment the president said, "There are 115 Turkish companies with the highest number of employment in private sector in Ethiopia".

Vice-president of Foreign Economic Relation Board and president of Turkish Exporters Assembly Mr. Mehmet Buyukeksi on his part noted, the official state visit by H.E RecepTayyipErdoğan, president of the republic of Turkey in 2007 laid the foundation for such a fruitful Economic Forums between the two countries. "We have 2023 national objective and Africa has 2063 objective which we should align and work to achieve these objectives", he added.

Series of agreements were signed on the sidelines of the forum including on boosting small and medium-scale manufacturing industry andcooperating in the mining sector particularly in hydrocarbon resources.
